A Federal Agency Turns to RF Code for More Than Managing Assets

According to the International Association of IT Asset Managers (IAITAM), the average time spent counting assets during a physical inventory is approximately 1.5 minutes. And if an asset is not found right away, the reconciliation process can be more than 30 minutes per asset.  Multiply that time spent by 16,000 assets.

That’s the challenge one of our customers, a large federal agency faced. Besides having a large number of assets to inventory, they were doing this manually, with a resulting inventory accuracy rate of only 85% accurate. Then there were the staggering costs from a labor and a time perspective.

Enter RF Code.  Over the last 24 months, the agency has deployed RF Code’s fully automated active asset management system of tags and readers. Now, the agency is realizing results that they frankly did not believe were achievable.   Today, this Federal agency no longer takes inventory – they have inventory.    Using the RF Code fully automated solution, the agency has significantly reduced and almost eliminated all the costs associated with the inventory process.   In addition, and equally impressive:

  • Their most recent inventory yielded a 99.97% accuracy rate
  • They achieved approximately $400,000 in cost savings
  • The realized ROI in 8 months.
  • And they received an added layer of security

Security is a valuable “by product” of the RF Code solution. In this case, someone attempted to take a laptop out of the building without authorization, ripping off the RF Code asset tracking tag in the process. However, when the RF Code asset tag was removed from the laptop, it immediately generated a tamper alert, notifying appropriate personnel of the security breach.  The team immediately grabbed an RF Code M220 mobile reader, using the reader to “pick up” the radio signal generated by the discarded tag. Walking through the building, the reader “found” the tag in a trash bin located in a building restroom.   Marrying the tag location to the tamper alert time, they were able to coordinate video footage of a suspect entering the restroom at the time of the tag removal. With quick action, a tamper alert, a mobile device and coordination, they were able to return the laptop back to the agency.

While cameras are integral to the security of a building, especially a Federal Agency, they do not have the intelligence to know if a specific asset should or should not leave the building.    The added layer of security via the RF Code solution provided this incremental value that helped prevent a laptop theft and apprehend the culprit.

In today’s world, in which we are asked to do more with less and achieve greater returns on investment, RF Code’s Asset Management solutions are doing just that.
