RF Code and Geist Introduce Integrated Offering for Data Center Power Monitoring

Wire-Free Solution Eliminates High Costs of Wired Ethernet Solutions

AUSTIN, TX and LINCOLN, NE (March 23, 2011) —RF Code, Inc and  Geist today announced they have integrated RF Code’s wire-free power monitoring solution into a line of Geist Power Distribution Units (PDUs). This move gives Geist customers a more affordable power monitoring alternative to traditional wired approaches requiring expensive-to-install and to maintain Ethernet connections. The solution consists of RF Code PDU sensor tags that easily plug into a Geist Satellite Current Monitoring PDU, RF Code readers and RF software that captures and manages the power monitoring data.

Instrumenting a data center for power monitoring is fast becoming a best practice, driven by the need to have information about power usage at the rack level. Having this information gives data center managers the information and flexibility they need to run more efficient, power-smart facilities. Until now, the problem has been how to do this cost effectively. Wired power monitoring solutions require an Ethernet connection, which is expensive to both install and maintain.

Instead of utilizing an Ethernet connection for each PDU, Geist customers can now just easily plug an RF Code R170 PDU Tag into the Geist PDU. The solution then streams the current monitoring data “wire-freely” over the RF Code radio frequency infrastructure into RF Code’s Sensor Manager software or Geist’s Environet platform. (See related release.) Either gives a unified look into a data center’s power usage.

“Geist prides itself on the ability to quickly customize its solutions to meet specific customer needs,” said Brad Wilson, Chief Technical Director at Geist. “Our modular technology makes this possible. We see RF Code’s easy to deploy PDU tag as an extension of our ‘modular’ approach, for those customers looking to quickly and affordably add power monitoring without adding the cost of Ethernet configuration.”

“RF Code brings to market innovative solutions that solve quantifiable problems,” said Chris Gaskins, RF Code vice president, Product Development. “The problem here is how to manage and balance the need for providing the necessary power to run a data center against paying for that power. The RF Code-Geist integrated solution helps data centers optimize power consumption by providing a more affordable way to monitor power usage.”
